Abraham B Kofa, SR

It is with great sorrow that the Kofa family announces the passing of our father, Abraham Borneworh Kofa Sr., born to the parents of David Wleh Kofa and Mary Seyonnah Tweh; in King Williams Town (Sinoe County) Liberia, October 22, 1942. His father was a fisherman and handy man. He built canoes and fished on the Atlantic Ocean. His mother was a choir master that was raised by missionaries who ensured she was educated. Abraham was a very smart boy; however, often got into trouble for his mischievous ways (climbing trees, fighting, throwing rocks). Due to the aforementioned, at 12 years old his mother asked his older brother, John Kofa to transport him to Monrovia, Liberia in hopes to be able to seek education. He lived in various places with his older sister and cousin, often completing odd jobs to earn a living and attend school. There was some time; which he was displaced and struggled to make ends meet. Abraham was very determined; as a result, he worked arduously and was later given a job at the YMCA. His hard work did not go unnoticed; as a result, he was offered an apprenticeship. He was later offered an opportunity to train in the electrical field due to his uncanny ability to climb the electric pole and grasp the electrical content. He began working for Shermack the Electrical Company and was later chosen as one of the 15 young men to travel to the United States for training in 1964. He later worked for Power Utility Authority (PUA) and Liberia Electricity Company (LEC) being one of the men who came back to build the Mount Coffee Hydro plant in Liberia; which was built in 1966. Abraham served as superintendent for many years and then later traveled back to the United States to attend school in Iowa. In the interim, he continued to build his family. His first children Mary & Martha Kofa were born by Cecelia B. Peter in Bishop Brook (Capital bypass), Liberia. He later met his wife Sarah Kofa of almost 30 years in Monrovia, Liberia at his birthday party in 1963. They then began to grow their family raise their children: Thomas Kofa, Jackie Kofa, Abraham Kofa Jr., William Kofa, Victoria Kofa. Abraham migrated to the United States, in 1972, to establish his career and life in the United States; eventually traveling back to Liberia, in 1977, for his wife and 3 children (Abraham Jr., William and Victoria). In 1978, their last child, (daughter) Sabra Kofa who was born in Naperville, Illinois. While in the states, Abraham Sr. and the family lived in Chicago, Naperville and later Bolingbrook, Illinois. The family moved to Bolingbrook, Illinois in 1979, where the children completed majority of their academic career and established their own families. During this time, Abraham Sr. obtained a job with the City of Naperville where he worked for 30 years from July 12, 1976-December 29, 2006. Abraham Sr. retired as the crew leader of the Distribution Operation Electrical Department. He later moved to Powder Springs, GA in 2015, where he built a beautiful home to live closer to his family and watch his youngest grandchildren grow. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead, January 23, 2018, at his home from a heart attack.

He leaves to mourn his loss his ex-wife, Sarah J. (Barclay) Kofa, his 7 surviving children: Mary Kofa, Martha Kofa (Natt L.Sumler), Thomas Kofa, Jackie Kofa-Watson (Siaffa Watson), William Kofa, Victoria Kofa (Emmanuel Quaye) and Sabra Kofa-Dunn (Edward L. Dunn), 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by his first son, Abraham B. Kofa Jr.; also, mourning his loss are his siblings: George Kofa, James Kofa and Agatha Kofa; predeceased by: John Kofa, Alice Kofa, Jesse Kofa and twins. He was also predeceased by 8 additional siblings (by father) with two surviving; Nehemiah Kofa and Esther Kofa. Abraham B. Kofa Sr. was the true definition of the “American Dream”. He had the tenacity and determination to make a successful life for himself and his family. His favorite words were, “I am Abraham B. Kofa Sr. and I am what I am”; which is a statement that rang true all throughout his life until his death. Our father, brother, uncle and friend is leaving a wonderful legacy that will be shared throughout the generations. We pray the peace of God upon him, may he rest in peace!
