Mrs. Betty Jean Austin Phillips, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 63 years. They met at a square dance and did the two-step right into a lifetime commitment. They were married in Clearwater, Florida in 1961.
Betty was born March 19, 1934 to the late Noah Ralph Austin and the late Eunice Barber Austin on a 110 acre farm. She was blessed with her father's work ethic and his sense of humor and her patience and gentle smile from her mother. Betty attended Hiram High School and was an excellent basketball player for the Hiram Hornets.
Betty was employed with the Shell Oil Company, Lockheed, UPS, and retired from the Georgia Department of Human Resources. Later, she served on the Paulding County Board of Equalization and was appointed as a board member of the county elections registration.
She was a true southern lady. She was a member of New Georgia Baptist Church who loved the Lord and was His faithful servant. Betty touched countless lives with her ability to connect with people and let them know how important that they were. She was an avid Braves fan and Georgia Tech basketball fan. For three decades she had children attending school.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Austin; and two sisters, June Bone and Alta Shipp.
Betty is survived by her husband, William Taylor Phillips; children, Deborah (Michael) Andersen, Karen (Dennis) Alsobrook, Kyle (Sandy) Phillips and Jon Austin (Kristin) Phillips and Beth (Troy) Rains; eight grandchildren, Noah Phillips, Kyle Phillips, Taylor Pruitt, Amos Phillips, Matthew Andersen, Audrey Braswell, Miranda Dixon and Lauren Harding; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Elaine Gibson; brother, Starlyn Austin; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends at the Clark Funeral Home on Monday, November 18, 2024 between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Mrs. Phillips will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the New Georgia Baptist Church with Dr. Keith Stell officiating. She will lie in state at the church from 12 noon until the funeral hour.
Interment will follow in the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church Cemetery.
