Betty Jean (Everett) Whitener

February 20, 1939 — April 17, 2023

Betty Jean Whitener passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023. She was born on February 20, 1939, a daughter of the late Erastus and Martha Everett in Auburn, GA.

Jean grew up in rural East Georgia. In time she found much success in her career making a big difference in the lives of many. She saw much of the world and worked with some of America's most powerful.  Senator Nunn and Newt Gingrich were among those who knew her and shared many flights with her back from Washington DC to Atlanta. She worked with the IRS for over 30 years. Jean was all about her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Whitener; a son, Jerry Richard Nix; and four siblings. She is survived by her two sons, Eddie Whitener, and Charles W. Whitener (Joelle); a daughter, Sheila Dyer; one sister, Marion Freeman; five grandchildren, Nicole McBrayer, James LaRoche, Caleb Whitener, Joshua Whitener, and Seth Whitener;  and six great-grandchildren.

A Graveside Service for Jean will be held at Appalachee Baptist Church Cemetery on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM with Pastor Stephen Everett officiating.
