Charles Frederick Mintz

Charles Frederick “Freddy” Mintz, retired Paulding County businessman, died peacefully at his home in Hiram early on Palm Sunday morning, April 14, 2019, just ten days before his 75th birthday. Freddy’s family was with him at his passing. Over the last weeks of his life, friends from all over the metro Atlanta area and from as far away as Tennessee had come to visit and reminisce with Freddy, making him laugh and smile with his old and dear friends.

Freddy was a native of Atlanta where he attended elementary school in West End. He attended the first years of high school in St. Louis before coming back to Atlanta to attend and graduate from Joseph E. Brown High School, where was a drummer in the Rebel Marching Band. His fellow band members remember him especially for his taking out a light fixture in the practice room – as well as a chunk out of the band director’s calf – while practicing cracking a bull-whip for a Christmastime presentation of “ Sleigh Ride”. He continued to play the drums the rest of his life. After high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves, and was trained as a radio operator.

After his time in the service Freddy lived in Savannah and Charleston, South Carolina, and worked with his father shrimping off the Georgia- South Carolina Atlantic coastline before returning to the Atlanta area. In May, 1966, he married another Atlanta native, Nancy Culbreth, and together they reared three children: Chuck, Angie and Kathy.

He was active for many years with the South Cobb Junior Civitan (“Jaycees”) and was credited with substantial community service with that organization.

Freddy was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed boating and camping. According to his children, Freddy “could fix anything” and was a talented mechanic. He operated a trailer hitch- installation business in Hiram for many years before retiring in 2012. Nancy was a Certified Court Reporter for the Paulding Judicial Circuit Superior Courts, and was an accomplished artist in several media, but primarily in oils. After her retirement, both Freddy and Nancy became members of the Paulding County Fine Arts Association, and Freddy developed as an amateur photographer. He had his photographs displayed with Nancy’s fine oil pictures at the Paulding County Historical Courthouse and made videos about these exhibitions for the local Paulding County cable channel.

Freddy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy. He leaves to mourn his passing his brother Bubba and his sister Peggy Crumbley, his three children and two grandchildren, Emily Corley and Madison Scarborough as well as his many, many friends – all of whom will always remember Freddy’s infectious smile and his great laugh.

In accordance to Freddy's wishes, his body has been cremated and a memorial service will be planned at a later date.
