Clyde Elizabeth (Smith) Walthour

Clyde Walthour, of 24 Acorn Trail, Dallas, a lifelong Georgia resident, passed away at 3:05 PM on  October 11, 2019 at the age 100.

Mrs. Walthour was born at home on June 15, 1919, at 1502 Iverson Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia.  She was married to the late William L. Walthour, Sr on August 21, 1937, for over 60 years.  Clyde was the daughter of the late Joseph Daniel Smith, Sr. and Sarah Maude (Howell) Smith.  She was a retired home maker and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Hiram, Georgia.

Surviving are her sons, William L. Walthour, Jr., and her daughter-in-law Teresa (Teri) Walthour of Douglasville, Georgia; Charles D. Walthour and her daughter-in-law Debbie L. Walthour of Dallas, Georgia; son-in-law Arthur L. Morton, husband of her late daughter Jerelyn (Jerry) Walthour Morton; her sister Maxine Smith Sims of Augusta, Georgia; 9 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren, and her lifelong best friends Gladys Cook of Conyers, Georgia.

Mrs. Walthour graduated from Tubman High School in Augusta, Georgia in 1936 and went to work at her first job for Sears, Roebuck and Company on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta. During WWII, while her husband, William, was serving in the U. S. Navy, she brought in extra income by running a boarding house from her home serving home-cooked meals to tenants who boarded there during the war.

Later, as the mother of 3 children, Clyde also worked for the IRS as a key-punch operator and typist for many years during the tax season.   After her children were older, she spent lots of time with her family at their cabin on Lake Lanier where she enjoyed fishing, swimming and water skiing in the summers and preparing cozy meals for her family by the fire in the winter.  In later years, she and Bill bought 25 acres of farmland in Green County, Georgia.  They had a small one-room cabin put on the land and stayed in it on the weekends while they developed a pond and a garden.  They entertained all of their children and grandchildren “up on the farm” and fishing in the pond.  After William retired, they sold the farm and the cabin on Lake Lanier to buy a park model home at the Blue Parrot RV Resort in Lady Lake, Florida where they spent “Snow bird” season enjoying many years of golf, swimming, playing “cuss” and bicycling with their Northern friends.  Clyde and Bill took several cruises and also enjoyed traveling in the United States with friends and church groups.

Later in life, Clyde volunteered frequently crocheting blankets for nursing home residents, and enjoyed quilling intricate pictures, and gardening.  She was an expert in the kitchen and loved canning and making seasonal candies.

Clyde was a loving wife and mother who put her family first.  She always had a kind word and a smile and was endeared by all who knew her.

Funeral Services for Clyde will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 3:00 PM from the Clark Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Joyner officiating. Interment will follow the service at Paulding Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM.
