Biography

Jack William Breed, age 84, died October 31, 2008, in Kennesaw, Georgia. He was born on October 9, 1924 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

A graduate of the University of Manitoba, he served three years in the Canadian Navy as an electrical artificer. Moving to Tullahoma in 1956, he worked as an electrical engineer at Arnold Engineering Development Center until his retirement.

Jack was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as a president locally and lieutenant governor at the district level.

As a member of First United Methodist Church of Tullahoma and Dallas, Georgia, he was head usher for many years in Tullahoma. Jack organized and worked on many church mission trips to Belize, Estonia, and Nicaragua. He also delivered meals on wheels.

After the death of son, Gordon, Jack was active in the local Compassionate Friends, a support group for parents that lose a child.

Jack worked many hours renovating and upgrading the South Jackson Civic Center’s building. He was honored as a “Hometown Hero” and a Kiwanis “Volunteer of the Year”.

Jack’s wife of 59 years, Lillian Ballantyne Breed, died in 2007. Jack is survived by two daughters, Lauraine Hamilton (Doug) of Tullahoma, Lois Thigpen (Joe) of Dallas. Grandchildren are Kristina Spurlock of Las Vegas, NV, Brian Spurlock (Kelly) of Williamsville, New York, Blaire Hamilton of Tullahoma, Doug Breed of Murfreesboro, Joshua Breed of Murfreesboro, Emily McCarthy (Patrick) of Savannah, GA, four great-grandsons and brother, Roy (Joan) Breed of Canada.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Alice Breed; his wife, Lillian; son, Gordon; granddaughter, Karen Hamilton and brother, Alan Breed.

Services will be held on Monday, November 3, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. CST from First United Methodist Church in Tullahoma, Tennessee. He will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to service time. Interment will follow in Rosehill Memorial Gardens.
