Mrs. Jewell Alberta Watts McGregor, daughter of the late Albert Lee Rankin and Lois Watts Reid, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at Carolina Caring Hospice of Catawba County. She was born in Iredell County on July 19, 1938. Mrs. McGregor was married for 46 years to Willie McGregor who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by four sisters; Hazel Brawley, Gloria Rankin, Ann Rankin, and Doris Steele. Three brothers, Jimmy Reid, Ronald Reid, and William Reid.
She attended Morningside school in the Statesville School System and received a BS Degree in nursing from a university in Ohio. She retired from the hospital system in Ohio. In 1992 following their retirement, she and her husband moved to Dallas Georgia. Jewell was an active member of Mars Hill Baptist Church in Dallas, where she served on various boards and ministries. Jewell was an active member of the Paulding Senior center and the Red Hatters.
In June of 2015 she moved to Pinecrest Retirement Living in Hickory, North Carolina. Jewell was active at Pinecrest where she served as an Ambassador, assisting with welcoming new residents. She served on various committees and actively participated in exercise classes (many times serving as the leader of the class). She loved Wii bowling and even had a couple of perfect games.
During her time in Hickory she would attend Shiloh AME Zion Church in Statesville where many of her family attended. In 2017, her nephew Bro. Henry V. Steele was assigned the pastor of Stewards Chapel AME Zion Church in Rural Hall, North Carolina. And when she was able, would attend church with him, and later would watch his services on Facebook Live.
She loved the long distance bi-weekly Bible Study lessons with her dear friend, Mrs. Vera Arney and was an active contributor in the weekly Bible Study with members from Stewards Chapel.
Jewell leaves to cherish the memories of her life, a step-daughter, Mrs. Sharyn E. McGriff (Johnny) of Orlando, FL; Mrs. Thelbert Rankin Summers of Statesville, NC; Albert Rankin of South Carolina, John Rankin, James Rankin, and Benjamin Rankin of Statesville, NC. A Brother-in-Law, Henry B. Steele (Essie) of Statesville, NC; Nephews, Henry V. Steele (Delora) of Hickory, NC, that she affectionately called her “Nephew-Son”; Tony Steele of Statesville, NC; Larry Scott (Joyce), Dallas, GA; Nieces, Lois Dawkins and Saundra Summers of Statesville, NC; Joyce Holmes and Connie Holmes of Capitol Heights, MD; Mrs. Cathy Queen(Peaches) of District Heights, MD; one Goddaughter, Annie LaFay Roberts of Dallas, GA. Jewell was blessed with so many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins and dear friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Monday, December 21st in Hiram, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 11 o’clock to 11:45AM prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Paulding Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Rev. Robert Bryant will be the officiant.
