Somewhere in God's divine plan it was His will that on Monday, April 2, 2007, Merridith Joe Lewis departed this life to move on to his home with the Lord. Joe was born January 27, 1941, in Calhoun County, FL, the second child born to the late Henry & Eula Lewis.
He was a graduate of Rosenwald High School in Panama City, FL and a veteran of the U. S. Army. He perfected his culinary skills at an early age and his love for that profession lead him to become one of the most accomplished chef's in the state of Florida. He was known as "Chef Miami Joe". He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and he was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Douglasville, GA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Eula Lewis, and one brother, Henry Mansfield Lewis.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mattie Lewis of Hiram; six daughters, Sherril Lynn Lewis-Parks of Los Angeles, CA, Kimberly Lewis-Davis, Los Angeles, CA, April Lewis Belton (Gary), Virginia Beach, VA, Natacha D. Lewis, Dallas, TX, Monique Lewis Key, Panama City, FL, and Teresa Johnson, Dallas, GA; one son, Donald Alexander (Lynette), Pleaston, CA; two brothers, Bishop Henry Barnwell (Sheila), Phoenix, AR, and Dempsey Lewis, Tampa, FL; four sisters, Mattie Walker, Panama City, FL, Mary Clay (Lamar), Greenwood, FL, Queen Cole (Bennie), Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and Betty Lou Lewis, Troy, AL; thirteen grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 6, 2007, at 5:00 p.m., from St. James A.M.E. Church in Douglasville, GA, with Reverend Como officiating. Mr. Lewis will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service. Clark Funeral Home in Hiram, GA is in charge of arrangements. (www.samclarkfuneralhome.com)
