Leonard Gentry Birchfield, age 84, of Centre, AL, formerly of Dallas, GA passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. He was born on May 3, 1924 in Mitchell, N.C. to the late Charlie William and Martha Birchfield. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Powder Springs. Mr. Birchfield was a Navy veteran and was serving on the USS Pennsylvania battleship the morning of December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Bernice Birchfield, a daughter, Susan Yvonne Anderson, his sister, Dora Rose and his brother, George Birchfield.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck & Sandie Birchfield of Centre, AL; daughter & son-in-law, Linda & Richard Jett of Mableton, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby & Barbara Birchfield of Bakersville, N.C., F. D. & Alice Birchfield of Unicoi, TN, and Charles & Ruby Birchfield of Bakersville, N.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel & James Watson of Spruce Pines, N.C., Virgie Clark of Hampton, TN, Margie & Kenneth Wilson of Unicoi, TN and Doris & Lawrence Boone of Bakersfield, N.C.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from Clark Funeral Home in Hiram, GA with Brother Greg Locklear officiating. The interment will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with David Birchfield, Randy Birchfield, Brian O’Neal, Rick Ayers, James Piper and Kenneth Ray serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the family.
