Mary G. Rakestraw, age 87, of Marietta, GA passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the home of her son. She was born on August 1, 1932 in Scottsborough, AL and married the late John Calvin Rakestraw, Jr. in Trenton, GA on June 1, 1968.
Mary was a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia and worked for more than 30 years as a nurse, as well as a teacher at Youth Christian School in Powder Springs. A member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Hiram, Mary was devoted to her church and community outreach. She was a faithful volunteer at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Kennesaw and instrumental in the creation of "The Been" in Dallas. In addition to her community service, Mary is remembered as a wonderful vocalist, pianist, seamstress, gardener and lover of all things musical.
Mary is survived by her daughter Sheila (Walter) Anderson of Acworth, John “Jake” Rakestraw (Jennifer) of Marietta, brothers Lonnie Satterfield of Chattanooga, TN and Ronnie Satterfield (Judy) of Ooltewah, TN, sister Faye Johnson of Rainsville, AL; grandchildren Lisa Paintin (Joe) of Douglasville, Matt Anderson (Somer) of Jefferson, Mark Anderson (Jessica) of Sugar Hill, John Anderson (Amy) of Dallas, and Max Morales of Marietta, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Pearl Gant Goolsby, and her brother Cliff Goolsby Jr.
A private graveside service for Mrs. Rakestraw will be held on Tuesday, May 19, at Paulding Memorial Gardens with Rev. George Barnett officiating. The family would like to extend their love and appreciation to everyone who will not be able to attend the service in person due to Covid-19 restrictions.
