Raymond McCollum, age 93, passed away peacefully on April 21. A lifelong resident of Paulding County, Raymond was born and raised on a farm in the Yorkville community on May 21, 1927. A true member of the Greatest Generation, he served in the US Army in Europe during World War II, then stateside in the US Coast Guard. Upon his return to Paulding County, he married the former Joan Hutchens, and began his career as an electrician with the L&N Railroad. He retired from the railroad in 1987. A long-time member and Deacon of First Baptist Church Dallas, Raymond was an avid gardener, a trout fisherman, a maker of white oak baskets, and a woodworker. His favorite times were those spent with his five grandchildren.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, John David and Stella Wynn McCollum, his four brothers (Leroy McCollum, Glenn McCollum, J.D. McCollum Jr., and Clyde McCollum), and his three sisters (Ruby Jones, Nora York, and Evelyne Bryan). He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan Hutchens McCollum, sons Neil (Anne) McCollum and John (Amy) McCollum, grandchildren Hutch McCollum, Dave (Caroline) McCollum, Katie McCollum, Erin (Mason) McCollum Towe, and Hallie McCollum, and sisters in-law Hallie Lester and Suzanne Kilgo.
Graveside service for Raymond will be held at Paulding Memorial Gardens in Hiram, Ga on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Don Rackley officiating.
Clark Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to First Baptist Church Dallas in memory of Raymond McCollum.
