Robert Langston Carter, age 74, of Douglasville, GA, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. He was born on October 28, 1941, in Atlanta, GA, to the late Morton Carter & Tommie Carter Henry, and was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Franklin Carter. Mr. Carter was a United States Navy Veteran serving on the USS Vega as a Radioman in the Vietnam War and served two years in the United States Reserves. Robert retired as an engineer with Georgia Power with 40 years of service, was a deacon at McPherson Baptist Church since June 27, 1965, and was the piano player and treasurer for many years. He sang gospel music with the Country Gospel Trio for over 35 years. Mr. Carter managed Dallas Memory Gardens Cemetery for many years. He had a love for flying and obtained five ratings including private pilot’s license, commercial, instrument, multi engine and helicopter ratings. Robert loved to travel and visited all 50 states in addition to Bermuda, Virgin Islands, Mexico, Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, and many cruises. He played bluegrass gospel at Gospel Jam and Poplar Springs and Senior Center at Rockmart and Dallas for many years. He loved square dancing and square danced since the 70’s, and was an avid motorcycle rider. Robert was a graduate of Dallas High School Class of 1960 of which he was voted most talented.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Swannie Carter of Douglasville, GA; son, Ritchie & Shelly Carter of Douglasville, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Gloria & Odell Rakestraw of Dallas, GA; brothers-in-law, Dan & Jackie Jones of Kennesaw, GA; TC & Joan Cochran of Centre, AL; sister-in-law, Patsy Carter of Dallas, GA; grandchildren, Megan & Robbie Tschorn and Courtney Carter; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 3 PM, from Clark Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Powel and Dr. Johnny Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Dallas Memory Gardens. Theodore Cochran, Dan Jones, Robbie Tschorn, Jeremy Mitchell, Jeff Carter, and Greg Carter will serve pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, October 14, 2016, from 4 PM until 8 PM.
