On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Vern Charles Jensen, a cherished father and beloved husband, died at the age of 94. Born on January 25, 1930, to Frank and Velma Jensen in Mapleton, IA, Vern graced the hearts of many, leaving behind a legacy woven with warmth and laughter. A Dallas, GA resident, he spent his life illuminating the lives of those around him, embodying a spirit of kindness and joy.
He grew up on an Iowa farm which involved hot summers and bitter cold winters caring for livestock and helping with crops. After the untimely loss of his father to leukemia when Vern was only 14, with a strong work-ethic he gave himself to several career paths which varied from a kitchen in a restaurant, to full-time fireman, warehouse worker for McKesson & Robbins, and a carpentry stint as he helped to build houses in Punta Gorda, FL. His job pursuits took him from his hometown of Mapleton, IA to Onawa, IA and to Sioux City, IA as well as the brief time in Florida. Vern however found his niche and dedicated many years to K.B. Foods in Omaha, NE, where his hard work and dedication built a foundation for his family as an institutional food salesman.
An adventurous soul, he found joy in square dancing, casting lines in Florida waters, and engaging in spirited games of cards. These pastimes brought him camaraderie and laughter, cherished moments that will forever echo in the memories of those who knew and loved him. He loved traveling with Laura to visit her Sioux City, IA and South Dakota family and in all the towns Gary's family and Roxanne's family lived as they moved from place to place in the mid-west and southeast.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Laura (Small) Jensen, and his beloved daughter, Roxanne Smay (Roger). He also has seven grandchildren, Mark Grenier (Jessica), Sarah Blackmon (Michael), Adam Grenier (Leena), Phil Smay (Lacy), Tim Smay (Nichole), Shannon Smay (Jayma), Frankie Valla, and 11 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love and resilience.
As we bid farewell to Vern, we embrace the beauty of his life, forever etched in our hearts. His spirit will continue to dance in the gentle breeze, fish in still waters, and echo in every card played. Though he has departed, the love he sowed will bloom eternally in the hearts of all touched by his remarkable journey.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Velma Jensen, 2 brothers, Marvin Jensen (Elaine) and Roger Jensen (Barbara), son Gary Grenier, and daughter-in-law, Donna Grenier.
