Walter Lemuel "WL" Ellis passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024. He was born on August 6, 1932, the son of the late James Auldon and Cora Olivia Chadwick Ellis in Atlanta, Georgia.
Walter served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 6 years, and then served in the U.S. Army until he retired in 1971. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his career with the military, Walter received the following commendations: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal 2/60 Device, National Defense Service Medal w/1st Oak Leaf Cluster, 2 Overseas Service Bars, and the Bronze Star Medal. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, Walter worked for Life of Georgia Insurance Company until he retired. Walter was dedicated to his lifelong church, Riverside Church of God in Powder Springs, Georgia. He loved working outdoors in his yard, playing golf, and traveling. Everyone that met him loved him. He had a contagious laugh. Walter was a very humble and kind soul.
In addition to his parents, Walter is preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Mae Renfroe Grier-Ellis; his second wife, Margaret Jean Jeffers Nolen-Ellis; a sister, JoAnn Askea; two brothers-in-law, Paul Askea and Jack Pickens.
He is survived by his sister, Lillian Pickens of Canton, stepsons J.R. (Tina) Nolen Jr. of Springfield, VA and Don Nolen of Marietta, OH, stepdaughters Jan (Roger) Tabor of Marietta, OH and Sabrina (Tom) Kerhin of St. Mary's, GA and many nieces and nephews and step grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Home and Chapel in Hiram, GA on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel at 1:00 pm with Rev. Thomas Blagg officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Dallas, GA.
